Have you cottoned on to Cotton Nappies?

More than 1,300 Warwickshire parents have managed to divert more than 1,600 tonnes of waste from landfill by cottoning on to cotton nappies.

Warwickshire County Council is continuing to encourage mums and dads to Cotton on to Cotton Nappies by offering £25 cashback to parents using real nappies for their babies.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Chair of the Warwickshire Waste Partnership and Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Cotton nappies don’t have to be about Terry squares and nappy pins! Modern nappies are shaped, come in a variety of funky colours are surprisingly soft and do not contain chemicals. They are just as easy to use as disposables and will not only save you money but will help the environment too.”

Evidence has suggested that babies who wear cotton nappies are more likely to potty train earlier than those wearing disposables, making the savings even greater.

A network of coffee mornings have been running on a regular basis since the scheme started in 2004. These “Nappuccinos” are designed to give parents the opportunity to touch and feel the different types of nappies themselves, they are free to attend and there’s no need to book. Parents will also receive a 10% discount on any nappies bought at the events and will also receive a £25 cashback on any purchases over £50.00. So far more than 1,300 parents have signed up to the scheme, diverting over 1,600 tonnes of waste from landfill and saving the council a staggering £70,000 in waste disposal costs.

George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton has already seen the benefits and every baby born on the maternity ward wears a cotton nappy. The scheme gives staff the chance to show parents how easy it is to use cotton nappies.

Cllr Heatley added: “This is a great opportunity for parents to find out for themselves the benefits of cotton nappies and how much they have changed since my day!”

Nappuccinos are currently held in Rugby, Nuneaton, Leamington Spa, Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon, further details can be found at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/cottonnappies alternatively call the Waste Minimisation Team on (01926) 412458.
