Lighten up as the clocks change

As British Summertime officially ends on Sunday, Road Safety Officers at Warwickshire County Council are supporting the Government’s THINK! campaign by warning parents throughout Warwickshire to ensure their children lighten up to be safe when out and about on or near roads.

The highest number of child pedestrian casualties occur between the hours of 3.30pm and 6pm.

Parents can easily make sure their children are seen by taking a few simple measures to brighten up:

Wear bright or fluorescent clothes – they show up best by day, especially in dull or misty weather

Reflective material is best by night – especially by car headlights.  Reflective tape can simply be added to clothing, school bags and equipment

Make sure, as a parent, you cross the road in the safest place possible – zebra, pelican and puffin crossings – and use the Green Cross Code – Stop, Look, Listen, Think.

If you are out at night, choose routes that are well-lit by streetlights and cross at well lit places.

Stan Milewski, Warwickshire County Council’s Senior Road Safety Officer said: “With darker mornings and evenings, there is always an increased risk to all road users, but especially children.  Every year in Britain, people are killed or seriously injured simply because they could not be seen by drivers.”
