Tributes to Warwickshire County Councillor Bryan Levy
Tributes have been pouring in from across Warwickshire in memory of Councillor Bryan Levy, a county councillor since 1989, who passed away on Sunday (4 November).
Cllr Levy had been unwell for a number of years but had continued to serve Warwickshire County Council.
Nevertheless, he continued to play an active part in the county council, even attending meetings in the week before his death, and remained an important figure in his adopted hometown of Rugby, serving also on the borough council.
Cllr Levy enjoyed an outstanding political career. He was formerly leader of Rugby Borough Council’s Labour Group and the first Labour Leader of Rugby Borough Council. He was a past Mayor of Rugby, and his many contributions to the Borough were recognised when he was made an Honorary Freeman of Rugby Borough in 2000.
With the County Council, Cllr Levy sat on the Rugby Area Committee, of which he was a former chair, and a member of the Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee at the time of his death. He had previously served on the Crime and Safety Overview and Scrutiny Committee and Employment and Inclusion Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
Cllr Alan Farnell, Leader of Warwickshire County Council, said: “Bryan worked tirelessly for his borough and for the entire county. It is fitting that he was still attending council meetings right up to his death. Whilst he will be most remembered for what he achieved in Rugby, he made an immense contribution to the entire county and will be fondly remembered by all his colleagues on the County Council.”
Cllr Tim Naylor, deputy leader of the Labour Group, echoed these sentiments. “Bryan selflessly served Warwickshire and the borough of Rugby. We would like to pay tribute to his commitment and enthusiasm which he retained throughout the two decades in which he served the county. Bryan brought unique qualities and will be sadly missed.”
Cllr Jerry Roodhouse, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group and a close friend of Cllr Levy, said: “Bryan’s efforts for Rugby and Warwickshire have been greatly appreciated over the years. We have lost a great friend of Rugby and Warwickshire but are fortunate that he left such a legacy of work and achievements.”
