The fashion business comes to Avon Valley
Teenagers have been putting their business brains and creative skills to the test at an event in Rugby.
The Year 10 pupils at Avon Valley School showed remarkable creative talent coupled with a good basic understanding of business when they undertook the Style Challenge this month in an event organised and delivered by the Warwickshire Education Business Partnership.
Each team had to become a design company, create their own name and logo, construct a business plan for their company, design an item of clothing, work out the cost of the materials, create and then model their garment and give a one minute presentation on their design and their business.
Using only very limited resources including bin liners and crepe paper the clothes were extremely creative ranging from evening dresses with accessories to tracksuits and jackets. All the teams managed to complete the challenge by lunchtime so their time management skills were put to good use too.
The students had advice and support from several business representatives including Rugby Borough Council, Hanson, Jaguar, Warwickshire Constabulary, Stepnell and AWP.
Louise Jones from Hanson said: “I thought the activities worked extremely well and a lot of thought was put in by the pupils. I think they benefited from having to work in a team and think for themselves.”
Jodi Kryniw from Hanson added: “The activity helps to prepare them for working life.”
Warwickshire Education Business Partnership works as part of Warwickshire County Council with businesses and schools to help address the constant demand from employers for school leavers to be ‘work ready’.
