Warwickshire County Council’s Education for Children who are Out of School Service (ECOS) are starting a fascinating project called Beyond the School which compares historical photographs with images of the same places today.

Young people are tasked with identifying the locations featured in historic photographs so that they can capture new photographs of the same locations. The educational project involves young people tracing the story behind changes to our environment.

The project organisers would welcome contact from anyone with interesting historical photographic documents, dating from the earliest photography right up to the1950s. Mick Rafferty from Warwickshire County Council’s ECOS Service said: “Beyond the School is a successful international project which is already running in several countries across Europe. It works with the idea that the landscape and our environment is a great informer – it holds the clues, stories and memories of our ancestors and helps young people to understand both physical and sociological change.”

The gathering and collating of the images involves young people using digital technology and photography, and ultimately the images will form part of the online collection http://www.beyondtheschool.org.uk, alongside similar research from all over Europe. 
The Beyond the School Project will continue until May 2008 and will culminate in an exhibition in Rugby Museum and Art Gallery later next year.
