Don’t let your Christmas go up in flames

Rugby fire fighters are reminding local people about the potentially deadly dangers of fire this festive season – so nobody’s Christmas goes up in flames!

It’s around this time that many people think about putting up their Christmas tree, if they haven’t already done so.

With that in mind, fire fighters from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service have put on a stark demonstration of exactly what happens when a Christmas tree goes up in flames.

A crew from Rugby’s Green Watch set fire to a fully decorated Christmas tree at Rugby Fire Station (see photo).

It’s all part of Green Watch’s Christmas fire safety campaign, supported by Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Arson Reduction Team, in the lead up to the festive period.

Andy Morgan, Watch Manager, said: “Christmas trees can easily catch fire when placed too close to fires or heaters. Fires can also be caused by people leaving candles unattended or too near to curtains or Christmas decorations.

“We are urging people to be careful where they put their Christmas tree and never to put trees near open fires or other heaters. Trees can also topple over or be knocked into a fire by children or your family pet.

“You should use an approved product to prevent leaves falling which is non-flammable and, if in doubt, have your Christmas tree lights checked by a qualified electrician. Always buy lights that conform to the British Standard.”

The crew have also entered into the Christmas tree festival at St. Andrew’s Church in Rugby, where they will also be highlighting the dangers of fire over the next few weeks leading up to Christmas.
