Fire kills, you can prevent it!

Firefighters in north Warwickshire are backing a national campaign – ‘Fires Start When Attention Stops’, in a bid to reduce the number of kitchen fires in north Warwickshire.

The kitchen fire safety campaign is being launched on Monday 17 December at the Co-op superstore on Station Street in Atherstone. Firefighters will be at the store with a fire engine with the ‘Fire Starts When Attention Stops’ banner.

Firefighter, Ben Francis said:
“The main aim of the campaign is to highlight the dangers of leaving cooking unattended. From April 2007 to October 2007 there were 18 house fires in North Warwickshire, nine of these were kitchen fires and eight were due to cooking being left unattended.

“Three out of the 18 properties did not have smoke alarms and these were the homes where people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

“As well as highlighting the dangers in your kitchen, firefighters will also be on hand to provide essential home fire safety advice and to offer free home fire safety checks to vulnerable residents including the elderly and families with young children.”
