Christmas fire safety has serious message!
Firefighters in Rugby are urging Christmas shoppers to visit them in the Clock Towers in Rugby for some Free Christmas Fire Safety advice.
Firefighters will be in the centre between 10am and 12pm and 2pm and 4pm everyday from now until Friday 21 December.
The firefighters have already shown local residents how quickly a Christmas tree can go up in flames when the fairy lights are left on overnight or whilst popping to the shops. They now want to back this message up by providing Christmas shoppers with the opportunity to come along and get free fire safety advice.
Watch Manager, Andy Morgan said:
“Christmas is the time of year when people are usually running around snapping up their last minute bargains, so fire safety is often the last thing on their mind when they are heading out to the shops.
“This campaign is not aimed at alarming people, but we do want local residents to be mindful that fires often start when your attention stops and at Christmas time a simple distraction such as party games and friends and families coming to dinner, can so easily result in a burnt turkey or even worse!”
But by taking a few simple steps this Christmas fire risks can be reduced around the home and everybody can enjoy a happy and fire safe Christmas.
* Ensure that you check the smoke alarms in your home are working, check them on a weekly basis and do not be tempted to remove batteries to power any Christmas presents
* Don’t leave candles unattended
* Don’t be distracted when cooking, fire starts when your attention stops
* Make your plan. Get out alive – plan your escape route for the event of fire and ensure all your guests know where the door and window keys are kept
* Don’t leave fairy lights switched on when you go out or to bed
* Keep Christmas decorations, cards and wrapping paper away from candles, open fires and heaters
