Give generously to your recycling box this Christmas

Warwickshire County Council and the five districts are urging residents to give generously to their recycling boxes this Christmas in a bid to cut down the amount of waste generated by the festivities.

At Christmas time people generate around 30% more waste but luckily most of this waste can be recycled. The Royal Mail delivers around 150 million cards and packets each day during the pre-Christmas period. It is estimated that if not recycled, up to 1 billion Christmas cards (17 for every man, woman and child) could end up in bins across the UK.

And we use an estimated 750 million extra bottles and glass containers and 500 million drinks cans at this time of year. About 20% to 30% more glass and cans are collected each year over the Christmas period.

If you don’t currently have a recycling box or if you need an additional box, all you need to do is contact your local Council:
North Warwickshire Borough Council on 01827 715 341
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council on 02476 376 170
Rugby Borough Council on 01788 533 533
Warwick District Council on 01926 456 341

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Recycling is an important activity for us all to take part in all year round but with more waste generated at Christmas than any other time of the year, it’s especially important to fill up our recycling boxes and place them out for collection.”
