Camp Hill students discover centuries old secrets

Students have discovered some green-fingered secrets from the past to help them better understand their potential future work.

The students all attend the free Greening Fingers Landscaping Course at the Opportunity Centre on the Camp Hill Industrial Estate in Pool Road, Nuneaton.

And to help them with their studies they were recently taken to the National Trust gardens at Calke Abbey, where they were given a guided tour by gardening staff.

Students gained an insight into how gardening at a stately home had developed through the centuries, along with how the National Trust had contributed in preserving centuries old gardening skills.

Mark Foster, the course tutor, said: “It was a pleasure to be involved with the students, especially as they all had a keen interest in landscape gardening and an environmental awareness.”

The innovative course, supported by Warwickshire County Council, is aimed at unemployed adults providing them with hands on experience in the horticultural workplace.

After taking part in the formal part of the course, trainees are then given the opportunity to attend a work placement at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, Warwickshire County Council, or the Camp Hill Gardening Scheme Ltd, so that they can put into practice skills that they have learned.

The Opportunities Centre is running the course on behalf of Building Sustainable Neighbourhoods and is keen to see more students sign up for the next course which is due to start on Monday, January 14, 2008.

Anyone wishing to attend the free course should contact Nigel Bond on 024 7638 7279.
