Recycle those Christmas cards after the festive season
The Woodland Trust and Recycle Now have teamed up with Warwickshire County Council and the five districts for the fourth annual Christmas Card Recycling Scheme.
Recycling Christmas cards is a very simple way everyone can cut down their festive waste and make a positive contribution to tackling climate change and this year it will be even easier to recycle those cards.
A number of stores are participating in the scheme WHSmith, Tesco, TK Maxx and – new this year - Marks & Spencer stores across Warwickshire will provide collection bins for cards at stores throughout January.
Thanks to public support last year, 93 million cards were collected, which is enough to enable the charity to plant 22,000 trees – or a forest the size of 44 football pitches.
TV soap star Emily Symons – Emmerdale’s Louise Appleton - is supporting this year’s Christmas Card Recycling Scheme. She says: "I am delighted to be part of the Woodland Trust and Recycle Now’s successful and worthwhile campaign. I am a keen recycler myself and will be taking all of my Christmas cards this year to participating stores. It’s a great way for people to get their New Year off to a ‘greener’ start and get into the recycling habit."
Sue Holden, chief executive of the Woodland Trust, which has collected 443 million cards since the scheme began 10 years ago, says: “Everyone who supports the Trust by recycling their cards is helping us to plant thousands of new trees throughout the UK.”
Cllr Martin Heatley, Chair of the Warwickshire Waste Partnership and Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “In Warwickshire alone we receive 8.5 million cards, and they all add up to some 57 tonnes of waste, by recycling these cards does not just reduce our waste, but supports the Woodland Trust.”
