New cycleway improves Kenilworth and Warwick link
Commuters and leisure cyclists alike can now take advantage of a new cycleway between Kenilworth and Warwick along the A429 Coventry Road.
The new 1.7km shared foot and cycleway extends from the A46 roundabout near Leek Wootton, passes the Saxon Mill, to the Primrose Hill roundabout on the outskirts of Warwick. It provides cyclists with a safer and more attractive alternative to cycling on the busy A429.
The cycleway was built by Warwickshire County Council to help Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, develop National Cycle Network route 52. This cycle route will eventually extend from Warwick to Coalville in Leicestershire, via Kenilworth, Warwick University, Coventry and Nuneaton.
Costing just over £250k, the cycleway is the latest addition to the local cycle network to be funded from the County Council’s Local Transport Plan.
Councillor Martin Heatley, Environment Cabinet portfolio holder, said: “We are pleased to help Sustrans develop this important strategic cycle route through the county and hope that the cycleway will encourage more people to cycle to work and for leisure between Kenilworth and Warwick.”
Mike Thomas from Sustrans said: “Sustrans is delighted to see this important section of Route 52 completed. With National Lottery funding available for a large section of the route in Kenilworth, and forthcoming path construction in Warwick, the National Cycle Network between Warwick and Coventry will soon be a reality for both leisure cyclists and commuters.”
