Children tackle real environmental challenge

Year 11 students at Rugby High School will be tackling a real environmental challenge this week.

This has been set by International Development Charity ‘Practical Action’ and will take place on Friday in a Real Context Problem Solving Day organised by the Warwickshire Education Business Partnership.

The students will first take part in some activities set by Warwickshire County Council’s Waste Management and Sustainability Units to raise awareness of recycling and how it is being tackled locally.

They will then rise to the challenge set by Rugby based green charity ‘Practical Action’ to address the problem of the use of plastic bags in supermarkets.

The teams will be competing with each other and against the clock to come up with some real solutions. After a fast and furious morning each team will then present their findings and their ideas and the winning team will be presented with a prize donated by the company.

Practical Action is one of Warwickshire County Council’s Climate Change Partners and is the first charity in the country to be working to tackle the causes of climate change. It was founded more than 40 years ago to bring real and sustainable improvements to people’s lives.

The EBP works as part of Warwickshire County Council with businesses and schools to help address the constant demand from employers for school leavers to be ‘work ready’.
