School Chef scoops tasty award

An Alcester school chef has booked herself a place in the National Final of the Local Authority Caterer’s Association School Chef of the Year competition.

Anita Hellyer from St Benedict’s RC High School in Alcester, represented Warwickshire County Caterers in the West Midlands regional final with her menu of
Spring Lamb Cassoulet with glazed vegetables and beetroot coulis which she followed up with a Warwickshire Apple Posset with berries.

The medieval themed dishes were inspired by Anita’s recent visit to local landmark Warwick Castle.  Judging was carried out by a panel which included a development chef, a community dietician, a representative from the Local Authority Caterers Association and two year six pupils recruited by LACA.
Anita, who won a commemorative plaque and a £100 prize, will now go on to the national final on June 11th at Birmingham College of Food to compete against the seven other regional finalists from around the country.

Rachel Brook, Development Manager for Warwickshire County Caterers said: “Anita has created a superb dish and we are confident that her culinary talents will serve her well in the national final.  The best way to encourage children to eat a healthy, nutritious diet is to serve imaginative food that looks appealing. With chefs like Anita, Warwickshire’s schoolchildren are getting a good start towards their life-long enjoyment of food.”
