Hunters Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre Re-opens

Schoolchildren are joining officials and dignitaries for next week’s re-opening of Hunters Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre in Rugby.

The pupils from nearby Avon Valley School’s Eco Council will join the proceedings on Monday at the official re-opening of the site following its £1.8 million refurbishment.  The household waste recycling centre will re-open to the general public on Tuesday 18th March 2008.

Avon Valley’s involvement also reflects the work that went on in using building materials from the old school in constructing the new site.

The newly revamped HWRC will offer improved facilities for the residents of Rugby and has been designed to ensure it can meet current and future recycling needs.

Users of the new site should be aware that there is now a one-way system in place, and should look out for the signs directing them to the recycling areas.  A new recycling store, which will be run by or on behalf of a charitable organisation, will open later on in the year.

The Hunters Lane HWRC has been rebuilt using nearly 7,500 tonnes of recycled material from the following sources.

The foundations of the new HWRC have been constructed using over 2,000 tonnes of rubble from the old site.

Around 5,400 tonnes of rubble arising from the re-development of nearby Avon Valley School has been recycled and used in the redevelopment.

The use of recycled materials on site not only saved a considerable amount of valuable material from being sent to landfill, but also reduced the overall amount of raw materials needed to develop the new HWRC.

The opening hours of Hunters Lane HWRC are as follows:

Residents should be aware that the five temporary cardboard recycling sites in Rugby located at Craven Road, Jubilee Street, Tesco’s, Ashlawn Road and Featherbed Lane will all be phased out by early May.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “I’d like to thank local residents for their support during the last few months while these works have been taking place, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. Hopefully they will find the new centre easy to use and we will see even more people heading along and recycling.”
