Working together to be better prepared for emergencies

The summer floods in Warwickshire proved how important it is for County and District Councils to work closely together in emergencies.

Responding to such events relies on effective partnership working, which is why the six Chief Executives of Warwickshire councils have signed up to a new partnership today to prepare Warwickshire for emergencies!

The agreement outlines how Warwickshire County Council Emergency Planning Unit will work with District Councils to assist them in delivering a range of duties, which are required by The Civil Contingencies Act 2004.  This act aims to ensure that local authorities and others such as the emergency services and health colleagues have to be prepared for emergencies, have plans and procedures in place and have tested them on a regular basis.  The act also requires local authorities to assess the risk in their area and to have measures in place for warning and informing local communities before, during and in the recovery phase following any major incident.

Jim Graham, Chief Executive of Warwickshire County Council said:
“In times of emergency we all need to be sure that the response from County and District Councils is efficient and effective.  By working together through this new agreement we can all ensure that we make best use of our resources and that local communities are well prepared and aware of the role they can play in an emergency.”

Paul Lankester, Chief Executive of Stratford-on-Avon District Council said”
“The District Council is committed to partnership working, especially where there are visual benefits for our District residents.  Signing this joint agreement shows our commitment to the County Council and our neighbouring District Councils in helping our local communities and businesses in emergencies and builds on the excellent partnership working during the July floods.”
