Awards for council heroes

Staff and Councillors from Warwickshire County Council have received awards from the Department for Local Government for going above and beyond the call of duty during the July 2007 Floods.

Councillor Ray Sweet, Projects Manager, David Curle, Workforce Development Manager, John Hawthorn, Operations Service Manager, Andrew Savage, Warwick Area Surveyor, David Ellison, Deputy Superintendent Registrar, Mandy Jackson and Wellesbourne Parish Worker, John Grantham, all received awards, some of which were presented at a ceremony in London.

The awards were given to staff for their part in reducing risk to life and property during the July Floods.

Projects Manager, David Curle said:
“I do feel that I accepted the award on behalf of all those people who helped during the floods in Warwickshire and kept services going to make sure that vulnerable customers were not at risk and that business continued.  The awards reception in London was really lovely. People attending came from across the country, from a range of occupations including firefighters, coast guards, army, navy, ambulance and the Red Cross.”

Deputy Superintendent Registrar, Mandy Jackson said:
“It’s really nice to receive thanks for a job well done and to celebrate success, but the real satisfaction came from knowing that we had been able to help and how grateful ‘our customers’ were for that help.”

Councillor Ray Sweet said:
“I was delighted to receive the award.  I was just doing my job as a councillor and didn’t expect to receive an award for doing something that is second nature after being a councillor for over 40 years. During the floods in July I assisted residents in Baddesley Ensor with digging out trenches to divert the water coming along the back of the recreation ground. I love working with people in the local community, it’s always been a passion of mine and I am grateful that we managed to stop residents in Penmire Close from being completely flooded.”
