Training motors forward in Rugby

The tried and tested partnership between Warwickshire County Council and Rugby Borough Council in developing vocational training schemes based in the heart of the community has taken a huge step forward today.

The proposed Motor Vehicle Education training centre based on Webb Ellis Business Park has now been fully equipped and is ready to take its first trainees.

This has been made possible by the funding grant given by Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council in recognition of the achievements of the current construction partnership centre on Webb Ellis Business Park.

Here, the two councils work closely with Warwickshire College to deliver construction training skills/qualifications at a foundation level, to prepare its participants for on-going higher level training and employment.

Lynne Wilson Project Development Manager from Warwickshire County Council, said: “We are building on the success of our construction centre which has been open since February 2006 and has assisted a large number of borough residents in gaining a qualification in building skills. The projects are aimed at those people who need some help and encouragement with learning and putting in the training at foundation level can and does give people the confidence to go on and undertake higher level study.”

Cllr Chris Saint, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: “This project gives participants a proven track record which is welcomed by employers who are looking for people who can show commitment and an ability to achieve goals.”

The Motor Education project will work with all ages and groups within the community to deliver accredited and none accredited courses in motor vehicle mechanics, motorcycle mechanics and, for the younger or less able individuals, who nevertheless welcome the opportunity to learn “push bikes” mechanics.

Initially, the accredited courses will be Foundation or NVQ Level 1 and are designed as a starting point in education. Help with moving on after the participants have completed their course will also be available in terms of advice on furthering their study and job search skills.

Cllr Neil Campbell, Rugby Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economy, Development and Culture said: "Following the success of the construction skills project this is a natural progression that help put people into a long term stable employment area and Rugby Borough Council is very pleased to be able to deliver this initiative in conjunction with our partners Warwickshire County Council.”
