Accident reduction trial on Fosse Way

A trial accident reduction scheme is underway on the Fosse Way following a number of horrific collisions.

Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Unit, which has been reducing road casualties year on year, has undertaken a review of the whole of Warwickshire’s section of the Fosse Way.

As part of this review a new scheme called RouteAware will be launched as a trial. As in many other parts of the country RouteAware will highlight key crash cluster sites to road users using roadside poster signs and associated publicity materials.

There have been a number of collisions on certain parts of the Fosse Way over the past few months and the county council’s Road Safety Unit is determined to tackle the type of crashes occurring.

The sections of the B4455 and the A429 have been investigated as part of the Speed Limit Review in order that the existing speed limit is better complied with and to address a number of sections of the road which are experiencing high numbers of crashes.

Jo Edwards, Senior Road Safety Engineer with the county council, said: “As a result of a crash analysis exercise the recommendations include addressing maintenance issues such as cats’ eyes and improved signing and lining. Bends will be treated with additional warning signs and will lead to the road appearing more consistent to road users. A number of other safety improvements are also being considered which include coloured road surfacing and flashing vehicle activated signs.”

In order to tackle the high number of speed related crashes on the road a number of additional safety cameras are also to be installed at key locations.

Cllr Bob Stevens, the county councillor for Feldon Division, said: “I am really pleased with the progress officers are making on this road and look forward to seeing improvements implemented soon.”

Cllr Chris Saint, the county councillor for the southern section of the Fosse Way, said: “This road has been of concern to many in our community for some time. Therefore, It is very encouraging to see our councillors and officers working together to find a range of good solutions along the whole route.”

Chris Fossey, county council Road Safety Liaison Officer, said: “Many road users are unaware of the tragic history that lies in our county’s tarmac. As well as engineering measures to reduce casualties we will also be trialling a new initiative to raise awareness of dangers on this road through roadside posters and publicity materials.”

The county council’s Road Safety Unit is committed to reducing road casualties and therefore new speed limits may be implemented outside of the above Speed Limit Review criteria where there is a significant number of personal injury crashes occurring. The council will also continue to implement the Village Speed Limit Review Scheme.
