Rugby teens turn media moguls
All 220 Year 10 pupils at Rugby’s Bilton School have explored the world of TV as they discovered the skills needed to build their own channel.
The pupils at the Maths and Computing College were recently issued a real business challenge by up and coming media company Fullrange Media to ‘Build their own TV channel’.
The students researched their audience, bought in programmes, chose advertisers and sponsors, created a webpage to promote their channel, tried to make a profit over a 12 hour period and gave a power point presentation about their channel to Fullrange media staff.
The day was a collaborative event organised by the Warwickshire Education Business Partnership, a part of Warwickshire County Council, with ICT staff, technicians and Personal, Social and Health Education staff from Bilton School, Fullrange Media, a media company based in Warwick, who set the challenge and business advisors from local companies including Asda, AWP, Fujitsu, Warwickshire Police and Land Rover.
Tony Tayler, head of PSHE at Bilton School, said: “This was a very good, large scale event and we were impressed with the way the students rose to a very difficult challenge.”
Fullrange Media Managing Director Steffan Aquarone said: “It never ceases to amaze me how much students of this age can take on board and produce in the time allowed. They all did really well.”
The event made full use of the new IT suites that the Maths and Computing College has recently opened.
The event has been co-ordinated by the Warwickshire Education Business Partnership, a part of Warwickshire County Council, who organise various initiatives to help prepare young people for the world of work.
