Long Shoot safety works complete

Works to reduce the number of accidents on a busy road leading from the A5 into Nuneaton have been completed.

As part of Warwickshire County Council’s continual improvement of the county’s roads the A47 Long Shoot in Nuneaton has undergone road safety improvement works as part of the Casualty Reduction Route Study scheme.

This busy road leading from the A5 into the centre of Nuneaton has a significant history of personal injury collisions resulting in 27 casualties over a 3-year period.

As a result a number of measures have now been made to improve the safety of the road and reduce road casualties.

These include a new 30mph speed limit from North Warwickshire and Hinckley College to the Hinckley Road roundabout with the A4254. A number of pedestrian refuges have also been installed along the whole route to improve crossing facilities and to narrow the road to slow traffic speeds down.

The refuges will also prevent dangerous overtaking. The Road Safety Unit will further enhance the new 30mph speed limit with flashing vehicle-activated signs. Signs will also be installed to reinforce the existing 40mph speed limit on the Long Shoot.

Chris Fossey, the Road Safety Unit’s Liaison Officer, said: “The changes have been introduced to tackle the high number of accidents on this road and will give the road a more residential feel to road users.”

County Councillor John Burton said: “I am delighted to see that the Road Safety engineering team have investigated the road and I look forward to seeing a big improvement in the reduction of accidents on this road. This road has been a local concern for some time and the measures installed can only improve the environment for the people living along the road.”

Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Unit, which is undertaking the works, will continue to monitor the scheme after implementation. The Road Safety Unit’s main aim is to reduce the number of people killed and injured on Warwickshire’s Roads.
