Children find treasure through music
A group of children have been taking part in a pioneering music project to promote emotional wellbeing at Milverton Primary School.
Treasure Music Club, a multi-agency initiative developed by Warwickshire County Council, aims to help children express their emotions through a range of musical instruments.
Children aged between seven and eleven have been taking part in the ten-week scheme. A joint venture between WCC’s Educational Psychology Service and County Music Service, the after-school club encourages the children to explore a variety of scenarios that involve expressing different feelings through music and circle time.
The music club was co-ordinated by the county’s Treasure Team, which works together with whole school communities to promote emotional wellbeing.
Treasure Team Area Co-ordinator, Helen Du’Mont from Warwickshire County Council’s Education Psychology Service, said: “The children who took part found they were more able to explore and express their feelings through music. The aim of this pioneering scheme is to encourage children to develop their emotional wellbeing through creative means.”
Milverton Primary School were also a key partner in the development of the club with both staff and the school council helping to shape its structure. Children in the group have been very positive, recognising, quite simply, as one seven year old aptly said, “When you feel sad, music can make you happy.”
