Double awards win

Warwickshire County Council has scooped two major awards for two very different projects in the north and south of the county.

Diverse and imaginative engineering projects went head-to-head yesterday at the 2008 Institution of Civil Engineers West Midlands Awards.

And Warwickshire County Council clinched two of the eight award categories, with Coleshill Parkway winning the Partnership Award and Barford Bypass winning the Construction Award.

The finals took place yesterday at Birmingham’s Thinktank, and guests of honour included ICE President David Orr.

Finalists heard that the winning entries were chosen for their innovation, creativity and benefits to the community and environment.

Barford Bypass, built by contractor Morrison Construction, opened in spring of last year three months ahead of schedule. The new road has reduced journey times for commercial and commuter traffic on the A429, and restored the peaceful rural character of the village of Barford.

The project included innovative and sustainable processes, such as flood culverts to reduce the risk of flooding in the village.

Meanwhile the Partnership Award went to Coleshill Parkway, which saw Warwickshire County Council and John Laing work together on the project with Carillion Rail and rail infrastructure designer Mott MacDonald.

This new railway station and interchange opened in August on an important rail route between Birmingham and the East Midlands, and is also close to the M42 motorway.

It has extensive car parking and bus links with north Warwickshire, the NEC, Birmingham International Airport and Hams Hall.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “My congratulations go to the many people who have worked on these projects. It demonstrates once again that Warwickshire County Council is not just about getting the job done, but about getting it done to the highest standard, while still offering local people the best value possible.”

Cllr Peter Fowler, the county council’s Portfolio Holder for Partnerships and Localities, and local Coleshill member, said: “I’m delighted to see Coleshill Parkway picking up the Partnership Award right here on my doorstep – both Coleshill and partnership working are subjects very close to my heart.

“Coleshill Parkway is an excellent example of how the public and private sector can work together to great ends.”
