Filming the filmers! Warwickshire headcams get in the frame
The news that Warwickshire County Council has funded headcams for a trial with school crossing patrols has made it over to Belgian television.
A crew was dispatched to England to get footage of the pioneering technology being trialled in Nuneaton where crossing patrol officers are regularly abused, driven at, and even assaulted.
The cameras are worn by the patrols and could also provide vital evidence in the event of a drive-through. Offending motorists face three points on their licence and a fine of up to £1,000.
Councillor Heatley, portfolio holder for the environment with Warwickshire County Council, spoke to Belgian News about how the council is combating the problem.
He said: “Nobody is proud that we have to go to these lengths to safeguard the people who make sure that our children get to school safely.
“But I was pleased to be able to demonstrate to our European counterparts that, in Warwickshire, our children’s education is a priority. Anybody who jeopardises this, in or out of the classroom, can expect to have a fight on their hands. They know it. And so, now, do the good people of Belgium!”
Cllr Martin Heatley is a regular visitor to Brussels in his capacity as rapporteur for the Committee of the Regions.
