Children celebrate Fruity Friday
Primary school pupils kicked off a season of healthy eating when they celebrated Fruity Friday last week.
On Friday 16 May, schools across Warwickshire marked Cancer Prevention Week when they tucked into a special Fruity Friday lunch. The menu was prepared by Warwickshire County Council’s catering arm as part of a World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) initiative to raise awareness of the links between diet, nutrition and cancer prevention.
Fruity Friday coincided with the launch of the County Caterers new summer menu which will see all primary school pupils in Warwickshire being offered a starter of fresh fruit and vegetables every school day.
On Fruity Friday children tucked into an array of dishes and accompaniments including fresh fruit crudités, seriously fruity salad and fabulously fruity jelly washed down with fruit punch or strawberry milkshake.
Warwickshire County Council’s creative cooks have added a variety of appetizing dishes to their new Summer Sizzler menu, which features an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables and brand new dishes including; Organic Meatballs in Gravy, Spanish Tortillas, Apple Snow and Yummy Carrot Cookies.
Every meal is given a health boost with a starter of fruit and vegetable crudités and can choose potatoes, rice or pasta to accompany their meal and wholemeal bread and chilled water is available throughout the lunch.
Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families, joined children at Bishopton Primary School for the Fruity Friday lunch. She said: “Fruity Friday is an excellent way to promote the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet, with the added benefit of offering support to a valuable cause. Children who eat better, do better and we are really pleased that we have been able to implement healthy eating so successfully in Warwickshire”.
Fruity Friday is just the latest initiative being run by Warwickshire County Council to promote healthy school meals. The service’s main aim is to provide food that is fun to eat, healthy and varied. County Caterers, Warwickshire County Council’s catering arm, provides school meals to nearly every primary and almost half the secondary schools in the county.
