Walking for Katy
A heartrending story has prompted staff and pupils at an Exhall school to organise a charity effort as part of this week’s Walk to School Week.
Rebecca Richards, a teacher at Exhall Cedars Infant and Nursery School, tragically lost her five-year-old niece Katy at the start of this month after a lifelong battle with severe brain damage.
And on Friday of this week she will be joined by staff members and children doing laps of their school playing field to raise money for Claire House Children’s Hospice, where Katy spent much of her life.
Rebecca said: “We are walking in memory of Katy to raise money for her hospice, which provided excellent care for her throughout her short life.
“All of my colleagues will be wearing blue Clare House T-shirts on the day. Hopefully we’ll repeat the success of three years ago when we raised £1,165 for the hospice, which went towards building a new teenage annex. Katy came to meet the children in an assembly after this event.”
Rebecca’s fundraising won’t stop there, and this weekend she’ll be joining her family, and nine month old son Alexander, in doing the Wirral Coastal Walk to again raise money for the hospice by completing the 16 mile walk.
Exhall Cedars Infant and Nursery School are also supporting Walk to School Week with other activities, and classes are doing literacy and georgraphy work linked to the week.
A record number of Warwickshire schools have signed up to this year’s Walk to School Week, with 142 Warwickshire schools are pledging to take part in Walk to School Week, 21 more than last year.
