Navigate your way to the 2008 Warwickshire Walking Festival

As part of this year’s Warwickshire Walking Festival, walkers are being offered the chance to brush up on their basic navigation.

Walkers are this year being offered more than 70 locations to head out and discover wonderful highways and byways as part of the 2008 Warwickshire Walking Festival.

And at 11am on Wednesday, May 28, walkers can enjoy a walk from The Waterman at Hatton, near Warwick, lasting about one hour 45 minutes.

This free walk is targeted at people wanting to learn some basic navigation skills, including map and compass work, while enjoying a walk along the canal and beyond.

At the end of the walk those taking part will be able to take a bearing using a compass, identify key features on the map, measure the distance and much more.

Everyone is welcome on this free walk, but booking is essential, call 01926 413419.

The walking festival, organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Countryside Recreation Team, gets underway on the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday 24th May, and continues through until Sunday, June 1.

There will be a festival of more than 70 guided walks across Warwickshire taking in familiar spots and hidden gems in the county’s varied landscape and historic towns.

Walkers will have the chance to join a themed walk about trees, wildlife, local history, archaeological sites, navigation skills or famous figures such as George Eliot or Shakespeare. Local myths and ghost tales will also be recounted on some of the walks.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “There are so many hidden gems in Warwickshire and this festival offers people a tremendous opportunity to get out there, whether on long walks or short strolls.

“There are the themed walks or you can simply enjoy Warwickshire’s beautiful countryside, taking in woodlands, some peaceful waterside walking along rivers and canals, and lovely old villages.”

There are walks suitable for all abilities, including health walks, and everything from a one-mile stroll around town to rambles of over 10 miles.

Anyone attending walks can enter a prize draw, with a chance to win a prize from local outdoor shop Jacksons of Arley.

There will also be the opportunity to show support for Macmillan Cancer by making a donation on any of the walks.
