Be adventurous and break out of the kitchen…
Most people only do it in the kitchen, but you can also do it in the bathroom and even the bedroom… we’re talking recycling of course.
As Recycle Week looms, Monday June 2 until Friday June 6, Warwickshire Waste Partnership is asking people to think about extra items they could recycle.
The partnership, made up of Warwickshire County Council and the five district and borough councils, is encouraging people to think not only about more things they could recycle, but also one more place that they could recycle from, such as the bathroom.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Chairman of Warwickshire Waste Partnership and the county council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “Recycle Week 2008 is about showing people there are lots more things we can recycle more – be it remembering to recycling glass jars as well as bottles; recycling things from upstairs as well as downstairs; helping people to understand why it’s important to separate out their recycling or sharing more information about what happens to our recycling once we put it out for collection.”
The variety of materials that can now be recycled is increasing and the places where you can recycle them. With nine Household Waste Recycling Centres across the county and recycling services available at your doorstep it has never been easier to recycle. Supermarkets are also doing their bit and now most provide facilities for recycling.
But the home is also a great recycling facility particularly for food waste. Around a third of all the food we buy ends up being thrown away and most of this could have been eaten – it’s not just peelings, cores and bones. Making use of the odds and ends of food that get left over makes economic sense and they taste delicious.
Here’s an example:
Ingredients:
250g leftover chicken
Handful coriander leaves
Small piece of fresh ginger, peel remove and finely chopped
1 chilli, seeds removed and finely chopped
Sweet chilli sauce for dipping and salad to accompany
Ground Black peppercorns
Instructions
Process the chicken in a food processor until finely chopped. Add the egg, breadcrumbs, coriander, ginger and the chopped chilli.
Process until the mixture is smooth, season well.
Using wet hands, divide the mixture into 8 small balls and lightly flatten, toss in a little plain flour.
Shallow fry in sunflower oil until golden on each side and serve with sweet chilli sauce for dipping and a crispy salad.
