Driving home the road safety message
Warwickshire County Council’s annual Road Safety event – Live & Dangerous – once again hits the road at the Heritage Motor Museum, Gaydon next week.
The event, which runs from Tuesday 10th June to Friday 13th June, is aimed at year six pupils from Warwickshire who are due to transfer from primary to secondary schools in September.
Many will be facing new journeys and using different forms of transport for the first time as they travel to a new school, so the event will highlight some of the dangers they may face.
Over the four-day event around 1,800 ten and eleven year olds will come face to face with six potential hazards based around:
Coach evacuation
In-car safety
Walking to school
Cycling and HGV’s
Finding a safe route to school
Consequences of actions
Each scenario gives youngsters the opportunity to explore dangers and develop strategies for dealing with potentially dangerous situations.
Cllr Martin Heatley, the county council’s Portfolio Holder with responsibility for road safety, said: “Many children only have the few weeks of the summer holidays to prepare for their move to a new school. There’s a lot to think about, but unfortunately road safety is not top priority for some parents.
“It’s not only the pupils that benefit from coming along to the event. You’d be surprised how many teachers come along to Live and Dangerous and comment that they have also learnt something new about road safety.”
In making Live & Dangerous happen Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Unit and Fire and Rescue Service work in partnership with Dairy Crest Distribution and Stratford College.
