Developing confident young women in Bedworth
Young women in Bedworth have been gaining confidence and working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Access Award thanks to an initiative run by Bedworth Youth Centre.
The Bedworth Respect Yourself project aims to raise confidence and self-esteem in young women as well as encouraging them to join the youth centre and become involved in youth activities.
As part of the project, 15 young women from Bedworth are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Access Award by taking part in a 12-week beauty course run by a professional tutor and convened by Warwickshire County Council youth worker Matt Mancini.
Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families at Warwickshire County Council, said: “Historically there have been low numbers of girls and young women accessing the youth service in Nuneaton and Bedworth.
“This project, however, has generated a really positive response. By providing activities that meet young women’s needs we are hoping to engage more of them in personal and social development opportunities.
“The members of this project are currently planning an all girls residential which is great for developing confidence and life skills and it shows the positive effects engaging with youth work can have. The team is thrilled with the response so far and I’m sure they will continue to generate positive work like this to help young women grow into strong and confident people.”
As part of the course young women will be trained in manicures, pedicures and make up, as well as attending workshops looking at staying safe and living healthy lifestyles. These include raising awareness of fitness and sexual health.
A residential is planned for the summer holidays period.
Bedworth Youth Centre on Croxhall Street is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7pm until 9pm for young people aged 12 and above. Bedworth Respect Yourself project meets between 5pm and 7pm.
