Youth Centre drives them crazy
Young people from Warwick Youth Centre have had the chance to test drive their driving skills– before they are even 17.
A pre-learner driver course, which took place at the Heritage Motor Museum in Gaydon, allowed 20 young people to get behind the wheel of a car before they are legally allowed to take lessons.
The aim of the course, which was organised by Warwickshire County Council youth worker Matt Mancini, was to teach young people about car maintenance, road safety and the dangers of getting behind the wheel, or even in the car as a passenger, when under the influence of drugs or alcohol. As well as theory tuition, qualified driving instructors provided ten driving lessons in brand new cars.
Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families at Warwickshire County Council, said: “This course was a great opportunity for young people to do something exciting in a controlled environment. They enjoyed getting behind the wheel and learning the basics of driving which should give them a head start when it comes to actually taking lessons – and it may even save them some money.
“But there is a serious side to this experience. The young people received some valuable words of advice about driving, road safety and making sure they get into safe cars – both in terms of how they are maintained and how they are driven.
“We’ve seen some terrible tragedies on Warwickshire’s highways recently. We need to make sure young people are well prepared before they take to the roads.”
Michael Bailey, one of the participants, enjoyed the day. He said: "This course has been a great experience. I have enjoyed driving and have booked further lessons from the instructors – for when I am actually 17!”
All the participants on the course were accredited for their efforts and received an ASDAN activities award certificate.
