On Tuesday 10th June, Warwickshire County Councillor June Tandy and Andrea Buckley, Warwickshire County Council’s Nuneaton and Bedworth Area Team visited the Air Cadets at their Squadron headquarters on the Ribbonfields, off Attleborough Road, Nuneaton to present the unit with a grant of £4,000.

The grant has enabled the Squadron to purchase a much-needed trailer, which will be used to support the units Adventure Training activities, Band and Field Gun Display team.

Flight Lieutenant Ian Crewe Officer Commanding 121 Squadron said:
“The new trailer will be a fantastic boost to the Squadron’s activities. Being able to put all the equipment in the trailer instead of using up space inside the minibus will enable us to take twice the number of cadets on each activity.

“Our Band and Field Gun Display team are often called upon to support the activities of other community and ex-service organisations within the area and transporting the equipment has always been a massive problem. The new trailer has already been used to take a group of twelve cadets from Nuneaton and Bedworth on a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition around the Elan Valley area in Wales.”
This was in fact the second time the Nuneaton Air Cadets had received funding from the Warwickshire County Council’s Community Development Fund. The first grant in 2005 enabled the 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron band to hit the right note in local and regional competitions when they received £3,450 in funding for the purchase of an array of musical instruments including six trumpets, six snare drums and a bass drum.

During their visit to the Squadron Councilor June Tandy and Andrea Buckley were invited to present certificates of achievement to band members who represented the Warwickshire and Birmingham area in the Central and East Regional Air Cadet band championship competition in 2007.

Flight Lieutenant Ian Crewe said:
“These certificates demonstrate the value gained by our cadets from the Community Development funding and the musical training they have received during their time with the squadron. Before joining our band the majority of these cadets had never played an instrument. To get to the regional competition represents a significant personal achievement.”

He added, “We are most grateful for the financial support we have received from the Warwickshire County Council’s Community Development Fund. The grants we have obtained have enabled us to significantly increase both the facilities and opportunities available to our cadets.”

Warwickshire County Councillor, June Tandy said ”I’m really pleased to be here tonight to hand over the cheque and present the certificates.  I am proud that Warwickshire County Council’s Nuneaton and Bedworth Area Committee have been able to help the group by giving funds so that more young people are able to get involved and take part.”
