New Leamington school work progresses

Work on the new North Leamington Community School and Arts College is well underway.

Students, parents, and the local community can now take a look for themselves as the new building rises from the ground.

The new school is set to be completed by Summer 2009, in readiness for the 2009-10 academic year.  Until then, as the excitement builds, a webcam has been installed for pupils, parents, staff and the public to view the progress being made on the site.

Since Miller Construction (one of Warwickshire County Council’s Framework Contractors) moved on to the Sandy Lane site last September, they have demolished the old Manor Hall buildings, laid concrete foundations, frames and floor slabs.

The County Council has worked closely in partnership with North Leamington Community School to create the building, which will boast four faculty blocks, a sports centre and a main building described as the ‘hub’, incorporating an Adult Learning Centre for sixth-formers and the community.

As a College for the Performing Arts, the school will have specialist dance, drama and music facilities, including a 400-seat theatre. As well as a large sports hall complex, there is a floodlit all-weather pitch and a floodlit multi-use games area. All these facilities will be available for use by the community as part of the schools extended hours programme.

Headteacher, David Hazeldine, said: "Students and staff are delighted to see the new school building taking shape, and many are taking the opportunity to look at the webcam to check how things are going on a day to day basis.”

Cllr Alan Cockburn, portfolio holder for Property at Warwickshire County Council, said:” There is no doubt that the new school will be a great asset to the local community, and we are delighted with the progress that is being made on this major project.”
