Helping hand to get back in the Bike Week saddle

Every year, hundreds of local youngsters take part in Warwickshire County Council’s cycle training scheme, and this year is no exception.

As the scheme celebrates 10 years, and during National Bike Week, cyclists both young and old, continue to get on their bikes.

Schools around Warwickshire are supporting Bike Week and hosting sessions, where a host of cycling skills will be revealed.

Cycle training has existed in Warwickshire since the inception of the county council in 1974, but it then progressed from the old Cycle Proficiency Training to what exists today – Cycle Skills and Cycle Awareness training.

And, looking to the future, the county council has been provisionally accredited to deliver the National Bikeability Cycle Training Scheme over the next couple of years.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We are extremely proud that over the past 10 years almost 30,000 cyclists have received cycle training in Warwickshire – not just youngsters like these here today, but all ages, and from all walks of life.

“Bike Week is all about getting people out and about on bikes – our mission is to encourage even more cyclists to be safe on the roads by attending one of our cycle training courses.”
