‘From bricks to Nature’ heritage trail

Part of Nuneaton’s history is being celebrated amongst the butterflies, birds and reptiles, as a new nature heritage trail launches on Saturday 21 June.

It has been built around Whittleford Park – a 43-hectare open, green space between the Stockingford and Camp Hill areas. It was once the home of both coal mining and the old Haunchwood Brick and Tile Works, but has recently been reclaimed by nature and the local community.

The trail received £37,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and was developed through Warwickshire County Council’s Building Sustainable Neighbourhoods initiative.

It will look at the site’s history and will include stone sculptures by artist Anthony Lysycia, designed after consulting with the local community.

A fun day has also been organised as part of the event including guided walks, stone carving, face painting, a treasure hunt, pond dipping, play ranger activities, displays and lots more between 11am and 3pm.

Cllr Gerald Smith, Mayor of Nuneaton, will cut the ribbon to officially open the new heritage trail at 12pm, followed by a few words from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The fun day and launch is being held by the ‘Clay Pool’ via Hamilton Court Road, off Haunchwood Road.
