Opportunities for young people under review by Scrutiny Committee
The Children, Young People and Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee (CYPF OSC) will meet at Shire Hall, 18 June to scrutinise, fully debate and subsequently consider recommendations on the following issues:
* Streamlining the process of procuring vehicles for outreach work to rural communities
* The progress made against the recommendations in the Wasted - Young People and Alcohol Misuse Review carried out by the CYPF OSC last year
* Implications of the reforms to the future curriculum for young people up to age 19
* The findings of the Educational Attainment Working Group
* The report of the North Warwickshire Local Area Scrutiny Panel on Educational * Attainment and Skills at 16 in North Warwickshire.
In line with the county council’s main priorities, opportunities for increased educational opportunities in North Warwickshire are included on the agenda.
The recommendations for North Warwickshire include maximising the resources of the county council for the benefit of the area. This would see an increased drive in attracting medium to high skilled jobs along with a drive to introduce a diploma system into the borough. The report recommends that issues such as transport, engaging employers, parents and guardians and cross boundary issues should be raised annually to ensure that obstacles could be ironed out at an early phase.
Further recommendations for the borough included increased accommodation for future school development, that the Education Business Partnership have greater presence in the borough in initiating schemes with schools working alongside businesses and that successful former pupils of secondary schools in the borough be encouraged to return and act as role models.
A standard item on the agenda will be a public question time, a session of up to 30 minutes in which members of the public are invited to raise any points with the committee
Councillor Richard Grant, chair of the Children, Young People and Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee, said: “The purpose of scrutiny and review committees is to go onto the front line and ensure that the services and programmes agreed by the county council are working effectively. We have met and spoken with young people, teachers and employers to capture as much information as possible and will be feeding this into the relevant channels if it can help the county to improve its services.”
