Charity climb will reach the height of Everest!

Firefighters in Southam will be literally climbing the walls this week to raise money for the Warwickshire Firefighters Families Fund.

The event will take place at Southam Fire Station on the 28 June 2008. Firefighters will be climbing up and down a 13.5 meter ladder in a relay to a combined height that will exceed the peak of Everest. The climb will take place over a 24-hour period starting at around 5am.

The ladder will be pitched to the 3rd floor of the drill tower and firefighters will climb an average of 20.4 meters each time they go up and down the ladder. It is calculated that they will have to do this 434 times to achieve their goal.

Leading Firefighter Alan Church said:
“It has been a really tough year and we are hoping that by holding this event, we will be able to do our bit to raise as much money as we can for the Warwickshire firefighters families fund. The challenge has been set and we are hoping that with some hard work and determination we will be able to achieve our goal.

“The charity climb will start at around 5am, so hopefully we will be able finish whilst there is still some light. We would welcome as much support as possible, so please come along to the station to cheer us on!”

Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, Richard Hobbs said:
“This is a great event for local people to get involved in to come along and give their support. The firefighters face a really tough challenge climbing the height of Everest, but all of the funds raised will go to the Warwickshire Firefighters Families Fund.“

A number of local businesses have already pledged their support for this event. If you would like to get involved, then please contact Alan Church on 01926 810570.
