Chinese delegation visits Rugby

Chinese directors and other high-ranking officials have spent a day at the Rugby Western Relief Road site as part of a tour of the United Kingdom.

The £37m development in Rugby proved of interest to the delegation from the Henan Province in central China and they spent a day chatting to engineers from Warwickshire County Council, contractor Carillion, and enjoying a tour of the site.

The group are spending just 21 days in the UK and their tour has included a visit to the Institute of Transport at Leeds University, a visit to both Oxford and London to look at travel arrangements, and they will be heading to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales to learn more about the different ways highway management is tackled around the country.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome our visitors from China, and I believe they found the tour extremely useful in looking at how a major two year engineering project is carried out.”

Meanwhile work is continuing on the Rugby Western Relief Road and motorists are being warned to avoid the Paynes Lane and Parkfield Road junctions where possible for the next couple of weeks as temporary traffic lights are in place.

This is to allow drainage work and the diversion of services to take place, and motorists are being warned of delays at peak times.
