Keep your head and drink sensibly

Warwickshire County Council’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) is urging students and school pupils to keep their head and drink sensibly, as the exam season comes to an end.

For many young people returning from University or College, drinking often plays a big part in celebrating the start of the long summer break…but the advice is to do it safely.

Warwickshire County Council is working in partnership with the local Primary Care Trusts, local service providers, Warwickshire Police, Warwickshire Probation Service and the District and Borough Councils as part of a joint Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for the county.

The aim is to make sure communities and partnership agencies have a combined focus on reducing the harm caused by alcohol, making Warwickshire an even safer place to live, work and visit.

Cllr Richard Hobbs, Warwickshire County Council Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, said: “We obviously want people to enjoy themselves, but to do so sensibly.

“If young people drink excessive amounts of alcohol it can have serious implications for their long term health. It’s not just the morning after they should be thinking about.”

The warning comes as a national Government campaign gets underway posing the question ‘You wouldn’t start a night like this, so why end it that way?’

It highlights the serious consequences of binge drinking and aims to change attitudes and behaviour amongst some young people.

Warwickshire County Council’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team have these tips for safer end of term drinking:
* Pace yourself with water or a soft drink after each alcoholic drink.
* Eat before you start drinking, or at least enjoy snacks or a meal with your drink.
* If you’re going out in the car make a decision in advance of who’ll be your “Des” – designated non-drinking driver.
* Or plan a safe way to get home before you go, using public transport or licensed taxi companies.
