Rugby Youngsters rise to the challenge

A handful of Rugby youngsters have been proving their worth in the world of work and achieved a formal qualification in construction.

The eight youngsters from a variety of Rugby Secondary Schools were picked to undertake formal vocational training through a DCFS funded programme and were lucky enough to get their training at Rugby Opportunities Centre on the Webb Ellis Business Park, Rugby.

The Opportunities Centre is a community based training facility made possible by funding from Warwickshire County Council, Rugby Borough Council and the Rugby Group Benevolent Fund.

It offers training at pre foundation and foundation in partnership with Warwickshire College.

Cllr Chris Saint, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: “In September 2006 the eight young people started their formal training in construction as part of their main stream education programme and through the dedicated work of the staff of the Rugby Opportunities Centre and the sheer determination and a growing belief in themselves, the young people have persevered and completed their qualification in construction multi skills.

“This is an excellent example of the work underway in the county with our partners to ensure the best possible future for our young people.”

To celebrate their achievements the youngsters, along with their parents or guardians, are to be special guests at an awards ceremony at the Opportunities Centre on Wednesday, July 16.

Certificates and tools of the trade are to be presented to them by Cllr Chris Saint. Other guests from Warwickshire County Council and Rugby Borough Council are also to be present.

This project is expected to be the first of many Re@ctiv8 programmes that will be offered at the Opportunities Centre as expansion is planned into the Motor Vehicle sector for September 2008.
