National acclaim for Coleshill Parkway

Coleshill Parkway has won national acclaim, winning a highly commended award as railway station of the year - and it’s not even 12 months old.

Warwickshire County Council last night attended the National Transport Awards in London after Coleshill Parkway was shortlisted as Rail Station of the Year.

Flint Station was the overall winner, but Coleshill Parkway was the only other station of the five shortlisted to receive a highly commended award.

Almost 1,000 people attended last night’s awards, with the cream of the country’s local authority transport experts hoping for acclaim.

And this award win comes just weeks after Coleshill Parkway won the Partnership Award at the 2008 Institution of Civil Engineers West Midlands Awards.

The Partnership Award went to Coleshill Parkway, which saw Warwickshire County Council and John Laing work together on the project with Carillion Rail and rail infrastructure designer Mott MacDonald.

This new railway station and interchange opened in August on an important rail route between Birmingham and the East Midlands, and is also close to the M42 motorway.

It has extensive car parking and bus links with north Warwickshire, the NEC, Birmingham International Airport and Hams Hall.

Since the opening of Coleshill Parkway 450,000 less km are being driven by vehicles on local roads, with 35,000 journeys made through the station.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “My congratulations go to the many people who have worked on this project. It demonstrates once again that Warwickshire County Council is not just about getting the job done, but about getting it done to the highest standard, while still offering local people the best value possible.”

Cllr Peter Fowler, the county council’s Portfolio Holder for Partnerships and Localities, and local Coleshill member, said: “Coleshill Parkway is an excellent example of how the public and private sector can work together to great ends.”
