Summer of fun for children

Warwickshire County Council’s ‘Positive about Young People’ are giving parents a helping hand over the school holidays by organising a variety of summer activities for young people.

The six week county-wide programme covers a variety of interests including sports activities like cricket coaching and football training, arts and craft sessions, music lessons, cookery classes and drama workshops to name only a few.

Special site-based activities for children with disabilities or a life-threatening illness will also be running throughout the summer.

Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families, said: “There should be something for everybody on the holiday activity schemes organised by ‘Positive about Young People’.

“It is a great way to keep Young People occupied whilst encouraging them to be active or perhaps try something new.”

Positive about Young People is a partnership between Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire Police. Our aim is to prevent disaffection amongst young people and remedy it where it occurs through a community-based multi-agency approach.

Despite bad weather during the 2007 holiday periods, the programmes, which include Snax ‘N’ Sports, made 45,990 contacts with young people across the county – that’s over 1,500 more than in 2006.

Services offered directly by PaYP including Snax ‘N’ Sports are free for young people. Services offered by some of our partners may have a nominal cost involved although partners have agreed not to charge those young people who are not in a position to pay.
