The big compost question
More and more people in Warwickshire are turning to home composting, but exactly how many, where they are and how they came to discover composting is currently a mystery.
Warwickshire County Council is holding the Big Compost Survey 2008 to try and find out the details, while offering three lucky people the chance to win £100, £50 or £25 in garden centre vouchers for completing the survey.
Anyone going to http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/compostingsurvey can complete the brief questionnaire and enter the competition – closing date August 31.
The survey also offers people the chance to request all kinds of information on composting and seek help and advice with getting the most from compost.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the environment, said: “With things like kitchen caddies, composting is becoming a regular part of many more people’s lives and we’d love to find out more about what people are doing in Warwickshire.
“Composting is a fantastic way of reducing the amount of rubbish going into the waste stream. In fact a third of the rubbish we throw away each week could instead be put to good use if we took up composting.
“It’s not just vegetable peelings and grass cuttings that can go in to your compost bin – it is important to add drier organic materials such as shredded paper, scrunched up cereal boxes and newspaper, mix it all together and your well on your way to producing rich compost.”
Warwickshire County Council and Recycle Now are currently offering compost bins at reduced prices. 220 litre bins can be purchased for just £17 or the larger 330 litre bins for just £20.
Bokashi bins are available from £38 for a twin pack. Order online by visiting http://www.recyclenow.com/compost or call 0845 077 0757 quoting reference HCA2.
