Have you got what it takes?
Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is asking residents from across Warwickshire if they have what it takes to be a retained firefighter.
Local emergency services form an important part of any community. Retained Firefighters are no different and perform the same duties as wholetime firefighters. Many retained firefighters have other full or part-time jobs, but when the call comes they become part of a team, ready to face any emergency. This can be anything from fires, floods and road traffic collisions to chemical spillages.
Working alongside full-time firefighters, retained firefighters are fully trained and capable people, saving lives and protecting their community. There is a shortage at the moment of people who are able to turn out and help in an emergency, particularly in rural areas.
Currently we are looking to recruit at the following stations:
- Alcester - Atherstone
- Bedworth - Coleshill
- Bidford - Brinklow
- Fenny Compton - Henley in Arden
- Kenilworth - Shipston on Stour
- Southam - Studley
- Warwick - Wellesbourne
Firefighters come in a range of shapes and sizes and although it is a tough job, all you need is to be fit and healthy. You need to live or work within a few minutes of a fire station, so that you can turn out quickly in an emergency. Because you cannot predict when you will be needed, you have to be flexible and available at short notice.
On average, you will be called out two or three times a week for a couple of hours. You will also be expected to attend weekly drill nights and occasional training courses.
So if you think you’ve got what it takes, this is your chance to prove it!
