Reuse shop expands at Burton Farm
The success of a re-use shop at a Warwickshire recycling centre, offering quality second hand items for sale to raise charity cash, has resulted in plans to expand the enterprise.
Since 2003 the re-use shop at Burton Farm Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), near Stratford-upon-Avon, has opened its doors to thousands of people, giving Warwickshire residents the opportunity to donate items that may otherwise be destined for landfill, in addition to supporting a good cause.
The Shakespeare Hospice is an independent local charity, which operates the re-use shop on Warwickshire County Council’s behalf.
The income generated from the reuse shop is used to provide specialist palliative care for adults diagnosed with a life-limiting illness in the Stratford-upon-Avon district.
Due to the success of the shop, plans have been made to extend the existing building to provide much needed additional storage space for donations.
The extension works are due to start week commencing September 8 and it is anticipated that the re-use shop will be closed for about nine days during the three weeks of construction for health and safety reasons.
The county council and The Shakespeare Hospice regret to inform residents that donation capacity will be extremely limited during the time preceding and during the extension works in mid to late September.
Members of the public can contact the re-use shop directly on 01789 299285 for guidance about what and how to donate.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We are delighted to hear about the success of The Shakespeare Hospice re-use shop at Burton Farm, supporting the shop by donating items is a positive way members of the public can reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill, while simultaneously raising money for a very worthwhile cause.
“WCC apologise for any inconvenience caused in the forthcoming weeks, I have the utmost confidence that our residents will be patient for the duration of the extension works and I’m sure residents will wish to donate items as soon as the shop reopens.”
Duncan Forbes, The Shakespeare Hospice’s Chief Executive, said: “It is with appreciation of our partnership with Warwickshire County Council and the extension of the lease of the shop, which has enabled us to extend the building to give us more much needed indoor space for donations.
“The Shakespeare Hospice is very grateful to all the people who have already made donations to the shop and we look forward to welcoming future donations when the shop reopens. If you would like to volunteer to help at the shop then please do get in touch, we would love to hear from you.”
Two similar re-use shops, which offer good quality second hand items also operate at Hunters Lane HWRC in Rugby and Princes Drive HWRC in Leamington Spa.
