Success at the Historic Environment Record

Warwickshire County Council’s Historic Environment Record is currently attracting attention from two national funding bodies, with money being allocated to the county to fund two important strands of work within the community.

Staff, have recently been successful in gaining funding to undertake two new archaeological projects.  Both projects are aimed at getting members of the public involved in archaeology and learning some new skills along the way.
The first project, supported by Museums Libraries and Archives West Midlands, will give Year 4 children from Dunchurch Boughton C. of E. Junior School the chance to become museum curators for the day and help create an exhibition, which will be touring Warwickshire libraries.
In addition to the exhibition, the project will also employ a storyteller to tell children about how Warwickshire was involved in the Gunpowder Plot.  As an example, did you know that the conspirators waited in the Red Lion Inn at Dunchurch to see whether Guy Fawkes had successfully blown up the Houses of Parliament?
In a second project, the County Council will be offering training courses to members of the public about how to identify archaeological objects that they might find in their gardens.  These courses have been made possible by funding from English Heritage.
Cllr Izzi Seccombe, portfolio holder for Children, Young People and Families said:
“I congratulate the Historic Environment Record on their energy in finding money to finance these projects as well as then organising and carrying them out.  They have a major educational benefit, particularly to young people and will teach them a great deal about the county’s rich heritage in a fun and enjoyable way.”
