Horse project is a galloping success

A project that builds confidence by bringing people into contact with horses is proving beneficial to people with learning disabilities.

The Warwickshire based Equine Facilitated Learning Organisation (EFLO) set up and run by Nicola Hepburn, is in the process of moving the Stratford project to their new Equestrian Centre in South Warwickshire.  They are also setting up their UK Centre of Excellence there, and are actively seeking funding opportunities to develop this project.

Nicola explained that the aim of the project is to enable people to develop confidence and self esteem through communication and building a relationship with the horses.

She added:
“People will hopefully then transfer the skills they learn into other areas of their lives.”

People who use Stratford Community Support Services, part of Warwickshire County Council’s Day Service provision for adults with learning disabilities, have been keen to get involved.

Lin Pile, Day Centre Officer at Stratford Community Support Services said:

“EFL especially helps people with limited communication.  We support a young man with autism who now directs and communicates with the horses, its been amazing!”

Alison King, has also benefited greatly.  Her Support Worker, Vicki Bennett said:
“Alison has only had a few sessions but we’ve seen massive progress.”

She added:
“It has boosted Ali’s self esteem.  Seeing the horses respond to her commands has given her confidence and a lot of satisfaction.”

Alison said:
“I was a bit nervous of the horse at first, but now I love it.  I like making the horses do the jumps.”
