Unique exhibition comes to Leamington
A one-off special exhibition leading up to Black History Month will be held at All Saints Parish Church Leamington Spa from 22-26 September.
‘We were there’ documents the little known but significant contribution made by ethnic minorities from the British Empire and the Commonwealth to UK defence. It is about people rather than events and celebrates personal commitment and professionalism regardless of religion, race, gender or social background.
The pictorial display has been organised by Shearon Williams, Warwickshire County Council’s Race, Equality and Diversity Officer in partnership with the Ministry of Defence school presentation team. The week long exhibition will be open to the public each day between 9am and 8pm with guided tours available to schools and community groups.
First presented in 2000, the display has been welcomed for educating visitors about contributions made by military and civilian personnel from other parts of the British Empire and Commonwealth and promoting better understanding between communities.
Shearon Williams, said: “Warwickshire is lucky to have the opportunity to show this unique historical exhibition. We hope visitors will enjoy their experience of ‘We were there’ and will be both inspired and moved by some of the courageous stories featured.”
Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Portfolio Holder for Children Young People and Families said: “This comprehensive educational exhibition is a perfect opening to Black History Month, which will celebrate ethnic diversity within the county. This is a fantastic learning opportunity for schools in the county and I’m sure they will enjoy visiting the exhibition.”
