Final chance to see unique Leamington exhibition

A one-off special exhibition leading up to Black History Month is currently on display at All Saints Parish Church Leamington Spa until Friday 26 September.

‘We were there’ documents the little known but significant contribution made by ethnic minorities from the British Empire and the Commonwealth to UK defence. It is about people rather than events and celebrates personal commitment and professionalism regardless of religion, race, gender or social background.

The pictorial display has been organised by Shearon Williams, Warwickshire County Council’s Race, Equality and Diversity Officer in partnership with the Ministry of Defence school presentation team.  The popular exhibition is open to the public and school groups between 9am and 8pm until the end of the week.

On Monday 22 September the exhibition opened with an event attended by members of the community, county council staff and representatives from the Ministry of Defence.

Marion Davis, Warwickshire County Council’s Strategic Director for Children Young People and Families provided an opening address, she said: “Warwickshire is lucky to have the opportunity to show this unique and accessible historical exhibition.

"We hope visitors and school groups will enjoy their experience of ‘We were there’ and will be both inspired and moved by some of the courageous stories featured.”

Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Portfolio Holder for Children Young People and Families said: “This comprehensive educational exhibition is a perfect opening to Black History Month, which will celebrate ethnic diversity within the county.  This is a fantastic learning opportunity for schools in the county and I’m sure they will enjoy visiting the exhibition.”
