Walking pupils feel the power
International Walk to School Month is being celebrated by 120 Warwickshire Primary Schools who are Powering Up throughout October.
This year’s Power Up theme is about how walking actually gives you energy as well as making you fitter.
Schools are using resources such as wallcharts where children can record how they’ve travelled to school, diaries of things to spot on the journey and stickers to reward children that walk to school. And it’s not just children that live within walking distance that can take part.
A key thing to remember is that everyone can take part, whether they walk the whole way to school, park a 10 minute walk away from school and walk the rest of the way or catch the bus and do their extra steps around the playground at breaktimes.
Laura Vesty, Sustainable Travel Officer said: “It would be terrific if we managed to drastically reduce the number of cars parking outside schools and so making the area safer for children walking.”
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "Last October we were really pleased that 74 Primary Schools took part so we think it’s fantastic that so many schools, children and parents are working really hard this year to keep everyone healthy by walking to school.”
